My paint has dried: how to recover it

If the paint on a can has become thick, it is almost always fixable. We tell you how to restore the texture and how to prevent it from happening again.

You sit down to paint, you open the #14 can and the paint is thick or stuck to the bottom. Don't worry: in most cases it can be recovered in a couple of minutes.

If it is thick or pasty

  1. Add water drop by drop. Wet the tip of the brush or a toothpick and drop one or two drops into the bottle. Do not pour water directly from the tap: it is very easy to overdo it.
  2. Stir well. Mix with the toothpick or brush handle until there are no lumps.
  3. Wait a couple of minutes and stir again. If it is still thick, add another drop.

Trick: the ideal texture is like that of creamy yogurt. If it is too liquid, it will cover less and the number will be transparent.

If it is completely dry

If the paint has become a hard block, it can no longer be rehydrated. Before giving it up as lost, see if there is soft paint left under the crust: remove the dried layer with a toothpick and use the one below.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Open only the cans that you are going to use in that session.
  • Clean the rim of the jar before closing it: the dried paint on the rim prevents it from closing properly.
  • Press the lid until you hear the click.
  • Store the jars upright, away from the radiator and the sun.
